Empowering Youth Through Mental Well-being
September 5, 2024
Earlier this year, Tahaddi’s Psychosocial Support (PSS) Center launched group sessions focused on mental well-being for Lebanese and Syrian adolescent girls and boys. Led by Rita, the center’s experienced therapist, these sessions have been instrumental in helping young participants navigate the complexities of adolescence while dealing with the added pressures of their challenging environments. The sessions explore essential topics such as understanding the human brain, the nervous system, stress release techniques, and emotional regulation. They also involve interactive and educational group games, which foster a sense of community and support among participants.
These sessions have taken on increased importance in recent months as Syrian youth in attendance have voiced growing fears and anxieties due to a recent rise in violence against Syrians in Lebanon. With the escalation of anti-Syrian sentiment, many young people feel increasingly vulnerable and afraid. “It is hard to concentrate in school or even play with friends when you hear about people getting hurt just because they are Syrian,” shared one participant. Amid these challenges, Tahaddi’s PSS Center stands as a safe “oasis” where these young individuals feel empowered, supported, and loved. The environment encourages them to express their emotions freely and learn constructive ways to manage stress and anxiety. One participant, reflecting on the sessions, said, “It was very helpful to learn how to calm down my stress level through breathing. I use this now when I feel overwhelmed.”
In addition to group sessions, Tahaddi’s PSS Center also provides individual support to youth and adults who exhibit symptoms of mental distress. These one-on-one sessions are tailored to the specific needs of each individual, ensuring they receive focused attention and care. When specialized help is required, a robust referral system connects them with psychiatrists or other mental health professionals. “We aim to provide a comprehensive support system,” says Rita, “and sometimes that means guiding them toward additional resources beyond what we offer here.”
Tahaddi’s commitment to mental well-being is not just about providing a safe space; it is about creating lasting impact by equipping young people with the tools they need to navigate their emotions and challenges, fostering resilience, and encouraging them to envision a more positive future.
